Finally, I've finished another piece. I worked on this for quite a long time, and learnt quite a bit, this is all image manipulation with just a touch of painting.
I decided to create it in black and white because it made the photo manipulation a lot easier and then to colour it afterwards. That was pretty tricky, I wanted to paint it so that it looked like something you'd find in a hubble shot, but I just couldnt get it to look right no matter what I did, so I settled on this. (If anyone wants to have a go at doing a better colouring job than me, the black and white version is in my scraps).
I'm quite happy with the outcome though, and I want to thank SamODJ a lot for his help and feedback on my last two pieces, because I think (hope) I've come a bit further since them.
So here it is, named after my wife's hair which was the baseshape for the nebula:
Approx. 15 - 20 hours (or somewhere in the vicinity)
All done in photoshop
Lots of layers and a very very slow computer!
Please give me feedback if you like / dislike anything about it, how I could improve it etc because it really helps!
/Nod I like this. It has some energy to it which I think it a god progression from your other pieces. It has the startings of good use of lighting, but I reckon youcould work on this even more.
The only really problem I would have with it, is the rather obvious use of cloud stock. Maybe some further manipulation.
But you know, you are learning, so lets no try to learn too much at once I think you did a very good job.

When you say rather obvious use of cloudstock do you mean in the middle section or just the whole piece generally? I'm still not so good at painting, so I've got a bit more work to do in that area I think, I learnt a lot from this piece though.
In terms of lighting, is there still too much of a blob of colour with it being gradated?
Erm, with stock use I mean I can tell where you have used a cloud texture stock to put detail in the nebulae. Don't get me wrong this is fine, just try smudging it out or manipulating it further to get rid of this problem.
As for lighting, well I think it works quite well here - perhaps give this a look: [link] and look how it has ambience, and how the gases within the nebulae look as if they are being affected by the lightsource.
Still not to worry, I think you pulled this work off well. I look forward to your next submission.

sense of depth is really great here!
the variation was very good too, and the colors aren't so bad. maybe they are just a little shy
flares looks good too, although I think they are a bit too uniform. I don't mean they are not realistic, but they aren't suiting well the piece, imo.
Shapes and textures are great, and most part of the stocks manipulation were well done. critiques I could give you about this would be the same *SamODJ had already said!
one more thing I wanted to point you is the planet. there's some people that makes really realistic nebulae without using planets (like `hameed), but I don't mean you shouldn't use them. personally, I would go for planets, because they can give you a great sense of emptiness and vast space if you use well (like sam has done on Exotica).
firstly, I wouldn't recommend you add special details near borders because it attracts the viewer attention out of the piece and so from the rest of the details of it, that's a fact.
then, the planet isn't bad at all, but it looks a bit too plain from here. atmosphere is kinda odd, boring, and there's a huge line around it, really strange. texture is cool, indeed.
well, you are doing really great.
hope to be able to always help you with my minimal knowledge
keep it up david!
